Archaeologists explore cave under Mexican Pyramid in Teotihuacan
The cave was found during the 1970's, and even today, arcaeologists do not know the use that the ancient culture of teotihuacan gave to this cave. In order to further explore this, Mexican archaeologists will explore this underground tunnel
The cave, not being natural, was created by the the teotihuacan culture, and is located under the pyramid of the sun, the third largest pyramid in the world and one of the main symbols of Mexican prehispanic culture.
According to historical sources, the underground caves in teotihuacan had a ritual usage. Human bones, which suggest the practice of human sacrifices in the teotihuacan culture, have been found in the surrounding area of the moon pyramid, but it is still unclear whether this caves have any connection with this rituals.
The cave was partly explored in 1971 and 1973 by the archaeologists Doris Hayden, and haven't been explored ever since. The main objective of the exploration will be to determine the series of events which led to the construction of this space, and eventually to gain a better understanding of its significance for the teotihuacan culture.

These explorations form party of the celebration of the first excavations made in Teotihuacan, over 100 years ago by president Porfirio Diaz. At that time, the excavation were done to celebrate Mexico's first 100 years of independence.
