San Francisco CaveVarious analysis suggest that human settlements started in this region nearly 10,000 years ago. The oldest paintings are thought to be nearly 4000 years old. All across this region, the paintings represent a great variety of animals and marine species, among some of these we might be able to find: serpents, reptiles, birds, sea rays, whales, dolphins, deers, turtles, sea lions and others. Human figures appear sporadically and only as background images. The feminine figures that appear in these paintings can be distinguished due to their breasts and some of them have representations of headresses which the Spanish jesuite monks saw on indigenous shamans. The magnitude of the paintings in this zone represents a level of collective effort which is not often seen in societies of hunters and collectors. Some of these paintings are located at unreachable places, that require strong communal support. The magnifiscence of these paintings have made Sierra de San Francisco a World Heritage Site.
