Colonial and Central MexicoFor a detailed overview about our tours in the area, click on the following link: Colonial Mexico Tours Overview about the area Tenochtitlan is the name of the ancient Aztec city which used to rise within what is today's Mexico city's historical centre. The legend says that Tenochtitlan was founded when a community of Aztec people departed Aztlan (Mystic ancient place whose location is not certain, but said to be located possibly in the North of Mexico and South of the United States). These people were led by Tenoch, who had the command of the god Huitzilopochti of founding a city wherever he could find an eagle eating a snake in the top of a cactus. He found the signal on March 13, 1325 and founded the capital of the Mexica empire. Huitzilopochtli's signal is today a national symbol represented in the Mexican Flag. Tenochtitlan's ruins still lie beneath Mexico's city's historical centre, and part of them can be appreciated in the Templo Mayor Museum, which used to be the religious temple of the ancient Mexica empire. Mexico's colonial period starts in the XVIth century, after the Spanish conquerors submitted the city of Mexico-Tenochtitlan, and founded the "New Spain". This name was given to the territory comprising today part of the today's southern United States, Mexico and Central America. This period lasted until the XIXth century, when the Mexican independence took place in the year 1810. Mexico City's Central region is the place where Mexico's colonial past can be best appreciated. Wonderfully preserved colonial towns like Guanajuato, San Miguel de Allende, Queretaro and Puebla will tell you magnificent stories about Mexico's Colonial History. A large part of Mexico's colonial economy was supported by the mining industry, and most of this cities were developed in the surroundings of ancient gold and silver mines.
