Morelia

Historically, Morelia has had various names, in the prehispanic times, the city was known as Guayangareo, and when the Spanish conquerors arrived, the city vas named Valladolid. It wasn't until after the independence period when the city acquired the name "Morelia", due to the Mexican independence hero José María Morelos.

The colonial constructions are the main attraction this city, Morelia's historical centre has also been delclared a UNESCO world Heritage site. Morelia's world heritage area comprises a total of 271 ha, in which there are 219 blocks, 15 plazas, and 1113 historical, civil and religious monuments.

To mention just some of them, we can find: The aqueduct, which was built in the XVIIIth century by the bishop Fray Antonio de San Miguel to suppy water to the city; Morelia's government palace, which used to be an old school where various national heroes like José María Morelos and Iturbide did their studies; Morelia's municipal palace, which used to be a tobacco factory; and the Ex-Convent del Carmen who is currently Michoacan's house of culture.

Religious architecture is, of course, an important emblem of the city. Morelia's Cathedral construction dates back to the year 1660, is Morelia's most representative building.

Without considering Mexico's beach destinations, and due to its historical and cultural richness, Morelia is one of the most visited tourist spots by national tourists.
