The region of Michoacan in which the city of Patzcuaro is located used to be land of the purépecha indians, also known as tarascos. The purépecha were always rebel people, to the extent that the aztec empire was never able to submit them. The name Patzcuaro was given by Bishop Vasco de Quiroga. Its original name was "Tzacapu anzucutin Patzcuaro", which can be translated as the "Heaven's door". Bishop Vasco the Quiroga is remembered in this town as a person who understood the local people, and treated them with respect and justice.

Patzcuaro is located at 2200 meters above the sea level, in the shores of the lake that holds the same name. Patzcuaro lake is one of the highest ones in Mexico, and its fishermen, who dip their nets in the water to catch the whitefish have become a national Mexican Symbol.

Patzcuaro holds an ancient atmosphere in its streets, Its buildings are mainly made out of adobe and bricks, with traditional red tiles in the roofs. Today, the people from Patzcuaro base their everyday lives in its fishing, agriculture and crafts manufacture. Patzcuaro's crafts are famous all across Mexico. Patzcuaro is famous worldwide for its day of the dead celebrations, in which various canoes light by candles travel towards Janitzio Island to offer food and flowers on the tombs of their beloved ones.
