PueblaPuebla is Mexico's 4th most important city in terms of its population and extension. The city was founded under the name of "Puebla de los Angeles" or "Puebla of the Angels" in the year 1531. The growing importance of Veracruz as a port needed a city in the way towards Mexico City. The city was intended to be located outside of indigenous settlements and dedicated to the leisure of the Spanish elite. The land was not unknown to the indigenous people that lived in central Mexico. Though there aren't any prehispanic settlements in the region, the land used to be used for agricultural purposes. The legend says that the origins of the city date back when the Tlaxcala Bishop Julián Garcés had a dream in which Angels traced the streets of a city in a field with flowers, herbs and rivers. He found the same field which he dreamed of at 25 km from Tlaxcala, where he founded the city of Puebla. It is for this reason that the city received the name "Puebla of the Angels". Today, the city shown its Spanish influence in every one of the corners of its Historical Center, declared a World Heritage Site by the UNESCO. The historical importance of the city is particularly evident during the French Intervention, when in May 5th 1862 the Mexican forces defeated the French Troops in the battle of Puebla. The food from Puebla is famous in and outside Mexico. It was in this place where the Mole Poblano originated. The Mole Poblano is usually served with chicken and is the typical dish of the city. Other dishes that originated in the city were the Chiles en Nogada and the Chalupas. The Rompope, an alcoholic beverage, was also created in the city. Interested in visiting this place?
