QueretaroThe city's complete name is "Santiago de Querétaro", but very few people relate it with its original name, and now it is mostly known and "Queretaro" all across Mexico. The city. The legend says that the city's foundation dates back to the year 1531, when Hernan Perez Bocanegra y Cordoba arrived to this region and defeated the troops of the chief Indian Conin, who later changed his name to Fernando de Tapia. The history about the conquest of this region is not very well documented, and most of the documents that exist today, come from religious sources. The religious legend refers to a battle that was sorted out without any weapons between 60,000 people. The battle was followed by an eclipse and the appearance of a cross next to the prophet Santiago, in the site in which today the Temple of the Sacred Cross is settled. This type of religious propaganda was used all across Mexico by the Spanish Priests to convert the local communities toward christianity. In any case, the truth is that Queretaro started from small indian Settlements who later mixed with the Spanish community. Queretaro's main symbol is its aqueduct, whose construction dates back to the year 1726. The aqueduct was buildt by Juan Antonio de Urrutia y Arana, to satisfy the need of the "capuchinas" nuns and take water towards the city. The legend says that Juan Antonio de Urrutia was in love with one of the nuns, and therefore spent a fortune in its construction. Whether or not Mr Urrutia was in love with one of the nuns, the truth is that he was married to Maria Josefa Paula Guerrero, and that he spent a lot of his money in philantopic causes for the people of Queretaro.
