Gulf CoastDuring the Month of March of the year 1785, Don Diego Ruiz, officer of the Spanish Crown was looking for tobacco fields in the hot and humid northern region af what is known today as the state of Veracruz. As he made his path through the dense jungle, he discovered a pyramid of considerable proportions, which he inquired about with the local Totonaca people. He didn't receive much information about the site, which made him think that the local people were intentionally hiding ir from the spanish conquerors. Such was the discovery of the Niche Pyramid of El Tajin. The pyramid received the name due to the particular shapes that cover it, and today is one of the most vivid examples of an ancient Totonac city. The Gulf region is a land of exceptional natural richness and beauty. The evergreen jungle and its numerous bodies of water make it a place worth visiting. The biodiversity in this region is among Mexico's richest, with species such as the Royal Toucan and the strange white bat. Mexico's highest volcano; the Citlaltepetl, or Pico de Orizaba, rises at its majestic height of 5,727 mts above the sea level. The legend says that an olmec warrior called Nahuani had an eagle as her advisor and friend, Orizaba. In one of various battles, Nahuani was beaten and brought to dead, Orizaba became so desperate about losing her friend that she flew to the top of the sky and fell directly into the ground. Eventually, a volcano rose from the spot where she had fell. Ocasionally, Orizaba remembers what happened to Nahuani and explodes in fury. To calm Orizaba's anger, local people must climb to the top of the volcano and express their respect towards Nahuani, Orizaba's eternal friend. Some interesting spots in the region are shown in the map below. Interested in visiting this place?
