TlacotalpanThe origins of this magnifically preserved city date back to the XIIth century, when Totonaca settlements were established in the region. The name Tlacotalpan (In the middle of the earth) was given by the Aztec conqueror Axayacatl, who submitted this region in the XVth century. The city of Tlacotalpan is known as the "Papaloapan pearl", it is settled by the shores of the Papaloapan river. Its current structure started being developed during the XVIth century by the Spanish conquerors. Today, Tlacotalpan is famous for its portals and houses in typical coastal style. In its Central Plaza is home to the temple of the "Candelaria Virgin", its local festival takes place during February 2nd, time where music and dances can be appreciated all across the city. Visiting Tlacotalpan is like making a journey in time, the native culture has been virtually preserved and the local people are proud of not having any type of modern settlements in the city. The large extent to which the city has preserved its fusion of Spanish and Caribbean architecture has made it been declared a World Heritage Site by the UNESCO. Interested in visiting this place?
