Centla SwampsThis ecological region covers approximately an area of 17,200 km. of the Mexican states of Tabasco and Campeche. Through the Centla Swamps, about a third of Mexico's water reserves drain through. The rivers Grijalva, Usumainta, San Pedro and San Pablo deposit in its basin thousand of tons of organic material that help mantain the ecosystem. The swamps count with some important historical background, since during the year 1519, the troops of Hernan Cortes Fought against the Chontales Indians in this site. The Chontales were defeated during this battle. They were particularly surprised by the Spanish horses, since they had never seen anything similar before. They thought that the horse and its rider were only one person. The indian tradition indicated that the party losing the battle should offer gifts to the other one. Therefore, the indians offered as gifts: gold, jewelery, jade and 20 young ladies, among which a woman named Malintzin was included. Malintzin would become Hernán Cortés interpreter, lover and counsellor. Interested in visiting this place?
