Pico de OrizabaThe Pico de Orizaba,(Also known as Citlaltepetl), is Mexico's highest peak, it rises to a total altitude of 5727 mts above sea level and it is the third highest peak in North America. This volcano has an elliptical crater of 410 meters of diameter and around 300 of depth. The Pico the Orizaba ranks 7th in the world in terms of its topographic prominence, being the second most prominent peak in the world, after Africa's Kilamanjaro. The peak is one of three in Mexico that hold permanent snow. The other ones are the Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl. The peak was explored during the colonial period, howenevr, it wasn't until the year 1848 that the French Apinist Alejandro Doignon reached its peak. The last volcanic eruption of this giant was registered in the year 1687, some scripts persist until today that tell the story about clouds of ashes that reached Puebla and Veracruz.
