VeracruzVeracruz is one of the most important ports of Mexico and a good place for spending a vacation. In the year 1518, Juan de Grijalva arrived to an island which he named as "San Juan de Ulua". In this island, a fortification was built to receive Spanish galleons of the XVIth century that can still be appreciated today. Veracruz's name was given during 1529, when Hernán Cortés arrived and named it "Villa Rica de la Vera Cruz". The city was founded directly in front of "San Juan de Ulua", which made it the first Spanish City in the Americas. Veracruz combines colonial buildings with modern facilities. Its joyful atmosphere and the particular friendliness of its people make it a particular interesting spot for the traveller. The beaches located directly in the city are not among the best ones in Mexico, but some good beach spots can be found in Chahalacas and Antón Lizardo, both of them ar around half an hour drive from Veracruz.
