TajinTajin used to be the capital of the Totonaca empire, its name means "Place of the thunder", and its construction dates back probably to the 1st Century. During its early beginnings Tajin shows an influence from the prehispanic central city of Teotihuacan, and later in the years an influence from the Toltec civilisation. Tajin was abandoned prior to the Spanish arrival, the site covers around 1 sq km, and archaeologists suggest that not all of it has been fully discovered. The site has various fields of "Juego de pelota" or "ball game", who was an ancient sacred game played to know the will of the gods. This game was played all across prehispanic Mexico, with some variants across different cultures, and it consisted of two tams passing a rubber ball across a fied by using only their hips and usually scoring by passing the ball through a rock ring. The site most famous monuments is the Pyramid of the Niches, who some archeologists suggest that contains a calendar in its structure. Interested in visiting this place?
