Los TuxtlasThe region of Los Tuxtlas is famous for its nature, its religious rituals and local healers. The olmec culture settled across this region. The region of los Tuxtlas comprises a total area of almost 2500km, and it is surrounded by the Sotavento plains. The region is home to three cities of interest, San Andrés Tuxtla, Catemaco and Santiago Tuxtla. Today, San Andrés Tuxtla is the main city of the region. The city is famous for its festivities of September 15 (Mexican Independence day) and for the Ylamas, who are giant paper balloons that are thrown in the air during the city's festivities. Catemaco is located just by the lake that holds this same name. The city is surrounded by volcanic peaks and local tourism is one of its main activities. The city acquired certain reputation for its local witchcraft practicioners, who sell their services for commercial purposes. The picture at the top shows the "Salto de Eyipantla", which is a huge waterfall located in the nearby region of San Andrés Tuxtla.
