CalakmulThe Calakmul Biosphere Reserve is one of the largest Natural protected areas in Mexico, it covers a total area of 723,185 ha, and it is located in South eastern part of the State of Campeche. The vegetation in this reserve is relatively well preserved, this makes it home for a wide varity of species. Among some of them we can find: Jaguars, howling monkeys, wild boars, and different types of birds. Calakmul was a Mayan settlement that used to be inhabited between the years 500 b.c. and 1000 a.d. Calakmul was the largest Mayan centre during the classic period, and it counts with over 500 archaeological ruins. Within the biosphere reserve, there are various Mayan settlements like the Ramonal, Xpujil, Rio Bel, Uxul among others. Calakmul is considered the second biggest city of all af the Mayan empire, after Tikal in Guatemala. Calakmul was discovered by the American biologists Cyrus L Lundell from the air in the year 1931, the first excavations in the site started just recently, during the 1990's, therefore, only some parts of the city havee been discovered untl today. When the exploration in this site started during the 1980's, the place was only reachable by helicopter. Today, there are roads that connect Calakmul with Campeche and Chetumal.
