Campeche

The name of the city Campeche comes from the Mayan word Ah Kim Pech (Place of little snakes), who used to be a Maya settlement. Campeche was founded in the year 1540, after nearly 15 years of fights with the local people. Its strategic location made it an interesting spot for the conquest of the Yucatan region, and later for taking resources from the Yucatan towards Spain.

During the XVIth and XVIIth century, the city was assaulted by Pirates in the region, which forced the spanish crown to built a defense system formed by large walls, forts and other ancient military equipment. Campeche's historical centre and its old neighborhoods are considered a UNESCO world heritage site. It counts with mixture of buildings that range between the XVIth and the XIXth century, whose construction served different purposes, like militar, religious, civil. The forts that were built during this period can still be visited today, like the "Puerta de la tierra" and the "Soledad Fort".

Campeche is known for its coastal seafood, We'd particularly recommend to try the "coconut shrimp" and the ""Empanadas de Cazon" (Shark), which are widely available across town for the traveler.
