Cancun and Isla Mujeres

Cancun is Mexico's most important tourist destination in the Yucatan peninsula. The story of Cancun is relatively recent. The name comes from the Mayan Word Ka'an Ku'un, which means yellow snake. During the early 1950's, Cancun was an isolated island in the Mexican caribbean only inhabited by some local people who used to take care of coconut plantations. The Mexican government decided to create a development with the help of FONATUR (National Tourism Fund), financed by the Inter-American Development bank of 27 million USD. With this money, an avenue was created that connected Cancun with the mainland, and an airport for the region.. The project was developed by architect Agustín Landa Verdugo, who flew all over Mexico to choose the ideal spot for the development of the new city.

During the beginning of the project, not many investors were interested in this development. The Mexican government was forced to finance the construction of the first 8 Hotels, but very soon the place started to become interesting for the foreign and national investor.

Cancun is built entirely for the tourist Industry, It is the city in Mexico that counts with the largest number of Hotel rooms and all inclusive results. Cancun's waters are crystal clear and its beaches are a fabolous place to relax as long as you don't mind the company of many international tourists.

At Cancun's main port, you will be able to take a ferry towards Isla Mujeres, or (Women Island) Isla Mujeres is busy during the day with many daytrippers coming to the island, but is a much quieter place at night. Isla Mujeres offers some fantastic beaches and places to relax and practice all types of watersports. The city is named like this since in Precolumbian times, it used to be a land of cult to the moon godess Ixchel. The Spanish conquerors arrived to this land and found images and sculptures of the godess and therefore gave it such a name.
