Celestun

Celestun is a small town located at 85 kilometers from the city of Mérida, in the Yucatan Peninsula. The Celestun Biosphere reserve counts with nearly 600 sq km, an the reserve is particularly known for being a place of shelter for the pink flamingo and various other bird spécies.

The ecosystem of celestun is unique due to its mixture of fresh and salt water from the gulf of Mexico, Celestun's flamingos are said to be the pinkest flamingos in the world due to the carotene concentration in its waters (Similar to the pigment in carrots).

The Pink flamingo measures up to 1.25 mts, and it weights between 2 and 3 kg. This specie is recognised by its long legs, its relatively short body, and his long neck, which helps him find food in the mud. The flamingo is an aquatic bird that is usually found in groups, it usually settles in lagoons and swamps where he can find microscopic fungi. The specie reaches its sexual maturity at the age of 2 and it can live up until 50 years.
