Chichen Itza

The Mayan ruins of Chichén Itza used to be an important Maya settlement during the Post-classic period. During the IXth century, Chichén Itza was one important political centre. The archeologists have found evidence that suggest the fact that some of Chichen Itza's main buildings were burned during the XIIIth century, this discoveries have led to the conclusion that Chichen Itza's fall happened in the middle of a violent movement.

Warriors, priests and traders formed Chichen Itza'a higher classes, The Mayan people from Chichen Itza used to practice religious cult to the Mayan god Kukulcan, who is the Mayan equivalent to Quetzacoatl in the Aztec mythololgy. Every spring equinox, the shape of the feathered serpent Kukulcan can be seen as she falls down its pyramid to receive the beginning of the new season.

Other important structures like the Chac Mool Temple, the ball game field and the temple of the thousand columns are still preserved in the city.

Close to Chichen Itzá, we will be able to find the Sacred Cenote. The legend says that the Maya used to use this giant pool as a way of communicating with Chaac, god of the Waters. The legend says that human sacrifices used to be given to the god, by throwing young ladies towards the cenote in order to keep the rain falling in Chichen Itza. Today, Aracheologists haven't found any evidence that suggest human sacrifices happening in the Sacred Cenote, but some of the most astonishing peices of Mayan art have been recovered from this pool.
