Holbox Island

Holbox Island is located in the Northern part of the Mexican State of Quintana Roo. The name comes from the Mayan "Black hole". Holbox has a total population of around 1198 people, and can only be accesed through boats that can be taken from the town of Chiquilá.

Holbox is located inside the Natural reserve of Yum Balam, some of the main activities of the island include the lobster capture and the ecotourism activities carried out around the largest fish in the world, the Whale Shark. The whale shark visits Holbox island during the months of June, July and August, where many snorkelers and divers gather to swim along with this giant.

It is expected that the Whale Shark can measure up to 20 meters, and weight more than 12 tons. This shark is harmless to the human, and it mainly feeds from plancton and small fishes, which he filters in his gulls by sucking water and opening up his giant mouth.

Few information is available about the reproductive patterns of the Whale Shark, however, it is expected that the whale Shark reaches its sexual maturity at the age of 30, and its longevity is of over 100 years. This specie is protected by Mexican law, and only snorkeling is allowed when swimming with them.
