MeridaMerida is the capital of the State of Yucatan. Its foundation dates back to the year 1542, by the Spanish Francisco de Montejo de Leon and 100 other Spanish families. The name was given since similarities were found between the Mayan ruins of Tho, and the roman ruins at the Spaish city of the same name. Various archeological Mayan sites are located close to Mérida, such as Chichen Itza, Dzibilchaltun, and Uxmal. Some of the stones of the Mayan city of Tho were used to built some of Merida's buildings, still, some Mayan people refer to the city of Merida as Tho. Part of Merida's colonial architecture comes from the XVIIth, XVIIIth and XIXth centuries. Within those constructions built during the XIXth century, a strong french influence can be appreciated. Merida is known as the "White City" due to the clear colors if its buildings. The city is full of art galleries and tourist shops, which can be appreciated mainly at the "Paseo de Montejo", which is Merida's most important avenue named after Francisco de Montejo, the city's founder. Merida is known across Mexico since it is one of the city's whose colonial past is one of the best preserved. The city has grown to the great extent that we can find inside the city, various haciendas who used to be located in its outskirts. Merida's cuisine is one of the best ones in Mexico, if you intend to travel towards the Yucatan, don't forget to try the "Cochinita Pibil", the "Panuchos" and the "Lime soup" and the "Papadzules".
