Sian Ka'An and Punta AllenLocated at 12 km south of Tulum, the biosphere reserve of Sian Ka'an is one of the largest in the country and the second largest one in the Yucatan Peninsula, after Calakmul. Sian Ka'an has a total extension of 582,000 ha, and about two-thirds of its extension is covered by swamps, jungles and mangroves, which constitute an important source of nutrients for coastal birds. and one third by the reefs of the "Mesoamerican reef system", which is the second largest in the world after the great barrier in Australia. Between the Months of May and March, 4 different species of endangered turtles can be appreciated nesting in the beaches of Sian Ka'an. Sian Ka'an means in Mayan "Where the heavens are born", and it was declared a UNESCO world heritage site in the year 1987. Besides its natural importance, the natural reserve counts with 23 archeological sites, some of which date back to nearly 2300 years.
