Tulum Ruins

This magnificent Mayan settlement dates back to the year 450 a.c., though most of the visible ruins today were constructed between the year 1200 and 1550. In ancient times it used to be called under the Mayan name of "Zama", meaning "City of Sunrise", the name was given due to Tulum's spectacular sunrises. The modern name Tulum refers to the walls that used to cover this city. Its location, just by the coasts of the caribbean ocean, makes it a populat tourist destination. Today, Tulum is Mexico's third most visited archeological ruins site, after Teotihuacan in Central Mexico and Chichén Itzá.

The ruins are one of the best preserved Mayan sites in Quintana Roo's coastal area. Today, Tulum can be mainly divided into three main coastal areas, The archaeological ruins, the Town or Pueblo, and the coastal Hotels, which offer accomodation in Cabañas and bungalows.

Most modern historians have reached the agreement that Tulum was an important site in the commercial route, and probably was one of the most important Mayan cities between the XIIth and XIVth century, virtually until the Spanish conquest of the Yucatan in the XVIth century.
