Uxmal

This ancient Mayan city began its construction during the classic Mayan Period, The city is located within the Puuc territory in southern Mexico, which is a group of citys that show a particular Mayan archirtecture known as Puuc, Uxmal is the most representative city of this architectural style.

The current name of Uxmal is said to be derived from the Mayan word Oxmal, which means "Rebuilt 3 times", and some people suggest that this makes reference to the number of times that the city had to be rebuilt. There isn't an actual prove to validate this theory, but the fact is that Uxmal is one of the largest Mayan settlements in the Yucatan.

The Spanish monk Fray Diego de Landa visited Uxmal in the year 1573, and it is out of this visit that Uxmal began to have modern historical records. His record suggest that native people did not know about the origin of this constuctions, and that some people suggested that they were built 900 years before.

The constructions of Uxmal are located in a North - to - South orientation, and among some of its most representative constructions we can find: "The Fortune Teller Pyramid", or the "Dwarf pyramid". The legend says that a dwarf, who was the son of a witch, made a bet with Uxmal's governor's. The bet was that the dwarf could build a pyramid in one night, which he eventually did and therefore became Uxmal's governor. This pyramid is the highest and most important construction in Uxmal.

Some other important constructions of Uxmal include the Governor's palace, the Ball game field, the Turtle House and the nun square, all of them of magnificent representations of Puuc Mayan architecture.
