North Mexico

(Top picture: Samalayuca dunes, Chihuahua, Mexico)

The North of Mexico is a land of magnificent contrasts, it is home to one of the most biologically rich deserts in the world, the Chihuahua desert. The desert has an approximate extension 630,000 sqkm, and it covers the Mexican states of Chihuahua, Coahuila, Nuevo León, Durango, Zacatecas, and San Luis Potosí.

The different ecological regions that form this land give birth to some unique landscapes. The grasslands provide support to a number of desert mule deers, foxes and sheeps that graze through the Mexican plains,

The particular geography of the western part of this region, can be best admired through the Chihuahua - Pacifico train route, which stops at various locations in which the traveler can admire the geological formations of the famous copper canyon. During this route, you will be able to visit the towns of Creel and Cuauhtémoc, home to the largest menonite community in the state of Chihuahua. We recommend that you try their delicious variety of cheeses, whose recipies date back to the XVIII century. During the trip, you will also be able to see the famous handicrafts of the Tarahumara or Rarámuri community.

Some other interesting spots in the region include:

  • Puerto Peñasco: A port located at the north region of the Sea of Cortez, whose calmed waters make it an ideal place for practising all types of water sports.
  • Kino Bay - One of the most attractive beaches in the Sea of Cortez.
  • San Carlos - Part of the port of Guaymas, the main tourist destination at the Eastern coast of the Sea of Cortez.
  • Paquimé. This mysterious prehispanic town is mostly known for its adobe structures, and it is classified as a world heritage site by the UNESCO.
  • The valley of Cuatrociénegas, located at the central region of the state of Coahuila, has the largest number of endemic species than any other place in North America, and ranks near the Galapagos islands in terms of the world's unique ecosystems.
  • Zacatecas, one Mexico's best preserved colonial towns, whose city centre is also classified as a UNESCO world heritage site.
  • Michilía and Mapimí Natural reserves, located at the state of Durango, the Michilia is home to the endemic Mexican Wolf
  • El cielo. Natural protected reserve in the state of Tamaulipas, close to the eastern coast.
