Copper Canyon

The copper canyon is a network of enormous canyons that form the most wild part of the Tarahumara Mountains. Among some of the main canyons that form this network, we can find: Urique (1680 mts), Sinforosa (1830 mts), Batopilas (1800 mts), Candameña (1750), just to mention some of them. Some parts of this network are deeper than the famous Grand Canyon in Colorado. The copper canyon name comes from one side of the Urique canyon, which became notorious for its copper mines. The different altitudes in the site can cause some extreme weather contrasts. There has been the case in which simultaneously, snow falls have occurred in the upper part of the canyon, and a hot weather in the lower parts where the rivers flow.

The universe of canyons, encompasses a wide biodiversity. Pine forests are located above 2000 mts, as you make your way down into the canyon, the vegetation changes towards semi-tropical. These changes can be seen as well with the fauna of the site, in which we can find a range of mammals, birds, reptiles fishes, etc.

From the geological studies that have been carried out in the region, we know today that the canyons were formed by volcanic rocks between 20 and 30 million years old, where a large amount of volcanic activity formed the "Sierra Madre Occidental", a group of mountains that cross the western part of Mexico.

The Tarahumara, or Rarámuri people inhabit the southwestern part of the Mexican State of Chihuahua, and a significant part of the Copper Canyon. Around 90% of its population is located in the municipalities of Bocoyna, Urique, Guachochi, Batopilas, Carichi, Balleza, Guadalupe y Calvo and Nonoava.
