Cuatro Cienegas

Cuatro cienegas is a natural reserve in the Mexican State of Coahuila. This ecosystem has not had any significant changes and today is a living laboratory for various scientists that wish to study ancient ecosystems similar to those living 550 million years ago.

Some microorganisms living in this site are said to be direct descendants of those species living in ancient shallow seas that used to be located in the place 550 million years ago. These organisms live under extreme conditions due to the absece of Phosphorus and the extreme solar radiations. This is the main reason why the NASA considers Cuatrocienegas a model ecosystem, since it allows us to undertand the evolution of spececies and study the possibility of life emerging and evolving in other planets.

Native Species to the region, such as the Coahuila Box turtle (Terrapene Coahuila) are located only in a small portion of the site. This turtle is considered the most primitive of its kind, and it is the only aquatic turtle specie in Cuatrociénegas.

The surrounding areas of Cuatro cienegas are of astonishing natural beauty, its pools make it a magnificent site due to the turquoise contrasts of its waters in the middle of the desert.

If you are thinking of going to Cuatrocienegas, please consider that some of the pools are reserved for scientific research, and that there aren't any Hotels in the site. Cuatrociénegas can be reached from the town on Monclova, at 83 km.
