El Cielo Natural ReserveThe natural reserve of El cielo is located at the south-western part of the State of Tamaulipas, the reserve comprises a total area of 144,531 sqkm, and it forms part of Mexico’s Eastern Mountain Range, or “Sierra Madre Oriental” . The site was declared a Natural reserve in the year 1985, and it was later recognised by the UNESCO as a heritage site. Its importance lies in the fact that the site is located within the transition of two natural regions: the Nearctic and the Neotropical. These particular conditions allow the existence of certain ecosystems and microregions of transition, among which the cloud forest occupies the main protection area due to its natural richness. Considering its importance as a natural reserve, local authorities at El Cielo do not expect this site to be a massive vacation centre, therefore, lodging facilities are limited and under certain criteria. Travelling to this site is not recommended for the traveller looking to have a luxurious holiday resort, but rather for the adventure traveller who enjoys wilderness contact and camping.
