Mapimi
The Mapimí Natural reserve is located at 130 km to the North of the City of Gomez Palacio. The natural contrasts of this hidden land mix a wide variety of natural landscapes.
The region known as the "Bolson de Mapimi" covers the Mexican states of Durango, Coahuila and Chihuahua, and it is home to the famous "Silence Zone". This enigmatic name reflects accurately the different mysteries happening in this region.
The history begins at the end of the 1970's, when a NASA rocket, the Athena, was flying over this zone, when it suddenly lost control and collapsed into the ground. A group of US specialists shortly came to recover the artifact covered by a strong security operation. Shortly after, a local person claimed to have found a region where the radio couldn't be heard. The strange land was studied by scientists, who came up with the hypothesis of the existence of a magnetic cone that caused the ionisation of the atmosphere.
It was at this point where the myth of the silence zone started, the presence of strange fossiles in the region, together with the existence of a unique desert turtle served as a basis to assign supernatural powers to this land. From the absurd legend that within this land conversations among people could not be heard, to the presence of UFO's and extraterrestrial activity in the site.
