Monterrey

Monterrey is the capital of the Mexican State of Nuevo Leon. The city owes its name to the Vice-King of the New Spain, Gaspar de Zuniga y Acevedo, Count of Monterrey. Monterrey is the second largest urban area in the country (After Mexico City), and the third in terms of population (After Mexico City and Guadlajara).

During the colonial Period, Monterrey was not a particular important city. The lack of precious metals and mines in the area, the poor soil fertility and the constant attacks of the local indigenous nomads made Monterrey a city of very little interest for the Spanish Crown. It is primarily for this reason that unlike other cities such as Zacatecas, San Luis Potosi or Guanajuato, large cathedrals and public colonial monuments were not built.

Monterrey was not an important urban area until the XIX th century, when important foundries and breweries settled in the area. During the 40’s, 50’s and 70’s, Monterrey became an important Industrial city, that would become an axis of the economic growth of the country.

Despite the lack of colonial architecture in the city, Monterrey counts with important cultural spaces, such as Contemporary Art Museum (MARCO), the Mexican History Museum, The Natural History Museum, The Monterrey Regional Museum, and the Nuevo Leon House of Culture.

The food in Monterrey is one of its cultural expressions definitely worth trying. Monterrey’s gastronomic past has its influence in the Jewish or Sefradí cuisine. The typical dishes in Monterrey include the “Machacado con huevo”, which is a dish prepared with dry beef meat, eggs and chilli, and the "Cabrito", which is a roasted young goat, cooked in the Jewish style.
