Tampico

The word Tampico has its origin in the Huasteca words "Tam" (Place of) and "Piko" (Water dogs), meaning "place of the water dogs" the place has such a name due to the numerous otters that once inhabited the region of the "Carpinter lagoon"

Tampico is an important Mexican Port founded in the year 1823, it is currently the most important port for the Northeastern part of the country. The city is characterised by an "Art Nouveau" architecture, similar to the one existing in New Orleans, and the local government currently administers a fund to preserve the architecture of some of the public buildings.

During Mexico's colonial period, Tampico was fully destroyed due to the constant pirate attacks. Today, the main charactieristic of the city is the oil industry, though it is important to notice that for a long time, this city's main activity was fishing.

The city is commonly known as the "Crab Port", or "Puerto Jaibo", manly because of the huge delicious crabs that live in the coast. One of Tampico's main attractions is its Historical centre, with important buildings such as the Customs building, the Cathedral and the Santa Ana Temple, dating back to the XIXth century.

During the afternoon, the visitor might be able to hear some notes of a "Huapango", the local music of the region played by street musicians.
