Mexico City to Yucatan. Mexico’s different Faces

You will get a chance to know Mexico’s diversity by following this route starting in Mexico City and heading towards the Yucatan Peninsula. You will get a chance to visit some of Mexico’s most relevant cultural icons, like the Templo Mayor, Teotihuacan, the City of Puebla, the Mayan Cities of Palenque and Chichen Itzá.

Day 1.

Arrival to Mexico City, pick up from the airport and transfer to your Hotel in Mexico City’s historical Center.

Day 2. Mexico City

Visit to Mexico City’s cultural sites: Templo Mayor Museum, where the ancient ruins of the Aztec City of Tenochtitlan can still be appreciated, the Mexico City Cathedral and Mexico City’s Anthropology museum, whose permanent collection is one of the most valued in the world for showing one of the greatest collections of pre-Columbian artifacts.

Day 3. Tula – Tepotzotlán

Tula was the ancient capital of the Toltec empire, which developed in central Mexico during the early post-classical period. The archeological site is known for its main pyramid, also known as temple of the Early Morning Star. The famous statues of the Tula giants rise at the top of this temple. These statues represent the ancient Toltec gods, and served as pillars for the wooden roof that used to be part of the temple.

Tepotzotlán is a small town that still preserves its colonial image and those characteristics of the traditional Mexican Architecture.

Day 4. Teotihuacán and Basílica de Guadalupe

On this day, you will get a chance to visit the Teotihuacán Pyramids. Teotihuacán’s history is quite mysterious, the site dates back to the year 200 B.C. and it was named by the Aztecs centuries after the city fell. Its original name is unknown, and its modern name in Nahuatl means “City of the Gods”.

After the visit, you will travel back to Mexico City for a possible visit to the “Basilica de Guadalupe”, Mexico’s most visited church known particularly for the cult to the Virgin of Guadalupe.

Day 5. Mexico City – Taxco – Cuernavaca

The town of Taxco is particularly known for its architectural beauty and its silver production. On Saturdays, the silver market opens its doors to visitors from all over the country looking to buy some of the best silverware in Mexico. Among Taxco's main architectural attractions, we can find the temple of Santa Prisca.

Overnight in Cuernavaca, known as “The city of the Eternal spring” for its pleasant weather conditions.

Day 6. Cuernavaca – Cholula – Puebla

Depart Cuernavaca for Cholula. Cholula is an archeological site whose main pyramid holds the Guinness world record for the biggest pyramid built in the world. The pyramid is even bigger than the Keops Pyramid in Egypt (Though the Egyptian pyramid is taller).

After visiting Cholula, you will transfer in the Afternoon to Puebla, a city whose historical center has been declared a UNESCO World heritage site due to its architectural colonial designs.

Day 7. Puebla – Oaxaca

After having breakfast in Puebla, you will depart towards Mexico’s southern mountain range to the city of Oaxaca. Oaxaca’s charm relies in its indigenous traditions and its colonial buildings. Oaxaca is the region in Mexico with the largest ethnic and linguistic diversity in the country, 18 of the 62 different Mexican ethic groups live in the state.

Overnight in Oaxaca.

Day 8. Monte Alban

Visit to Montealban’s ruins. The Zapotecos left in the city of Montealban a fabulous trace if their culture. The city was constructed between the years 500 b.c. and 100 b.c. and it acquired an important status among the region. The city gradually lost its influence from the year 800 a.d. until 1325 a.d. when it was invaded by the Mixtecos.

Day 9. Oaxaca – Tehuantepec

Visit to the Tule Tree. A tree who is over 2000 years old, and one of Mexico’s greatest Natural Wonders. You will continue your ride towards the Mixtec city of Mitla, after which you will enjoy an impressive ride through the highlands towards the tropic land of Tehuantepec.

Overnight in Tehuantepec.

Day 10. Tehuantepec – San Cristóbal de las Casas

After departing Tehuantepec, you will head east through the Mexican Southern Mountain Range towards Tuxtla Gutierrez and San Cristobel de las Casas. On the road, you will have a chance to take a boatride through the impressive Sumidero Canyon.

Overnight in San Cristobal de las Casas

Day 11. San Cristóbal de las Casas

San Cristóbal de las Casas is famous for its colorful buildings and for its indigenous heritage. Native Mayan Indians from nearby villages come every day to San Cristobal to offer some of their handicrafts in the local Market.

Day 12. San Cristóbal de las Casas – Palenque

The scenery in today’s route is very diverse. You will depart from the Mexican highlands towards the tropical jungle, where you will have a chance to visit the Misol-Ha Waterfalls, which are over 40 meters tall.

Day 13. Palenque – Campeche

Visit to the Palenque ruins. Palenque’s origins date back to the 5th and 9th century. It is known that it was one of the main cities of the time, along with Toniná, Calakmul, Pomoná, Comalcalco, Tikal and Copán.

In the afternoon, you will continue your ride along the Gulf of Mexico towards Campeche.

Day 14. Campeche – Kabah– Uxmal – Mérida

Visit to Campeche. During the XVIth and XVIIth century, the city was assaulted by Pirates in the region, which forced the spanish crown to built a defense system formed by large walls, forts and other ancient military equipment. Campeche's historical centre and its old neighborhoods are considered a UNESCO world heritage site.

You will then enter the Mayan Puuc Zone by visiting the ancient ruins of Kabah and Uxmal, where you will have a chance to appreciate the Dwarf pyramid, the largest Mayan temple in the Puuc Zone.

Overnight in Merida

Day 15. Merida – Chichén Itzá

Visit to Merida’s Colonial center, the local Market and the “Paseo Montejo”. At noon, you will head towards the world-Famous Mayan ruins of Chichen Itza, a UNESCO world heritage site. A large part of the archeological site has been excavated and restored. You will appreciate some of the most important Mayan temples like The Kukulcan Pyramid, the Chac Mool Temple, the ball game field and the temple of the thousand columns.

Overnight in Chichén Itzá

Day 16. Chichén Itzá – Cancun

Chance to continue the visit in Chichen Itzá or travel towards Cancún for enjoying the Mexican Caribbean beaches.

(Optional extended stay in Cancún, Playa del Carmen or Tulum).
