In the year 1520, during another expedition led by Francisco Cortes de San Buenaventura, he arrived into a wide valley, where he was received by numerous indigenous people who offered him various local fishes, birds and herbs. He gave the place the name of Valle de Banderas, known today as Puerto Vallarta. The region is also known for its diversity of marine life. A wide variety of sea turtles, like the green turtle, the hawsbill and the leatherback nest in the coast, however, they are largely threatened by local hunters, who pursue their flesh and eggs.
