Mexico Pacific

Mexico's Pacific coast offers nearly 2000 kilometers of different beaches for the traveler. A wide range of landscapes make this region of Mexico a popular destination. Cities with world-class beach resorts welcome the traveler looking for a comfortable & luxurious holiday, and coastal communities in deserted beaches open the doors for the adventure traveler seeking to experience the Mexican coastal culture.

The majesty of the region can be best appreciated by following the highway No.200, which provides access to the majority of the main coastal destinations, as well as to those beaches off the beaten track.

Most of the Pacific Mexican coast remained a relatively virgin place until recent times. Looking back in history, the Spanish Conqueror, Hernan Cortes, sent the first expeditions to this region in the year 1523. The expedition, led by Juan Rodruguez de Villafuerte, arrived to what is known today as the port of Acapulco, and gave the bay the name of Santa Lucia. Shortly after, The Royal Spanish Crown wanted to find new routes for the connecting the Phillipines with Spain, and Acapulco served this purpose for nearly 200 years.

In the year 1520, during another expedition led by Francisco Cortes de San Buenaventura, he arrived into a wide valley, where he was received by numerous indigenous people who offered him various local fishes, birds and herbs. He gave the place the name of Valle de Banderas, known today as Puerto Vallarta.

The region is also known for its diversity of marine life. A wide variety of sea turtles, like the green turtle, the hawsbill and the leatherback nest in the coast, however, they are largely threatened by local hunters, who pursue their flesh and eggs.

Oaxaca and Chapas, two of the most culturally rich states in Mexico are located in the southern pacific coast.
