Puerto Escondido
The legend says that Capitain Andres Drake, brother of famous Captain Francis Drake, anchored near a bay of calmed waters looking for spanish galleons to assault. Prevous to the arrival in the bay, Capitain Drake had kidnapped a Mixtec girl in the town of Huatulco. During a moment of distraction the girl escaped and swam towards the coast, where she disappeard from her captors. The girl was never found again, but the pirates continously referred to the girl as "La Escondida" or "The Hidden one". The place where the girl escaped started to be known as "Bahia la escondida", which later evolved to "Puerto Escondido"
The town is relatively new, only 30 years ago, only 400 people lived in the place. Today, due to the tourist promotion, about 20000 people live in the town, and it is one of the favourite spots in the Mexican Pacific for the International Traveller.
Puerto Escondido became famous due to the surf competitions that take place every November in Zicatela beach. Zicatela beach is considered among some circles of surfers as the second best surfing beach in the world due to the quality of its waves. The most famous beaches in town are: Carrizalillo, Puerto Angelito, Marinero and Zicatela.
At Only 33 km from Puerto Escondido, you can reach the Manialtepec lagoon. The place is a lagoon inhabited by various animals such as Pelicans, herons and cranes which make the visit to this natural site worth a day.
