Tuxtla Gutierrez and Sumidero CanyonSurrounded by Mountains, Tuxtla Gutierrez combines a traditional atmosphere with the urban background of a modern city. The city has been the Capital of the State of Chiapas since 1892. The abundance of Flora and Fauna in Chiapas is also part of Tuxtla Gutierrez's outlook. Part of the diversity that the city offers is the a walk through its Gardens such as the Joyo Mayu, or to walk through the "Xylophone Park" or "Parque de la Marimba" Tuxtla Gutierrez's central square remembers Chiapan Hero Don Joaquin Miguel Gutierrez, who defended independence and federalism, to whom the city owes its second name. The post office building in the central square is the residence where he was born and where he lived. The remains of this chiapan hero are buried underneath his statue in Tuxtla's central square. The regional museum of Chiapas in Tuxtla Gutierrez was opened in 1984. It has two large rooms to exhibit the permanent archaeology and History collections. The archeological collection is made up of around 10,000 objects, out of which 600 are on permanent display. Most of the collection is made up of objects made by the Maya, Zoque and the Chiapa. These ancient people inhabited in different periods of History the territory commonly known today as Chiapas. There are some impressive natural views in the ouskits of Tuxtla Gutierrez, such as the El Ocote Biosphere reserve, with 50,000 hectares of jungle and rich flora and fauna and the Sumidero Canyon National Park, which is one of the region's most spectacular sites. The canyon was formed due to the natural erosion of the water during the passing of the centuries. Today, the height of the canyon's walls ranges from 400 mts (1200 ft) to 700 mts (2100 ft), although some studies have shown that there are points of up to 1400 mts (4200 ft).
