Puerto VallartaCheck out our Colonial Tours, finalizing in Puerto Vallarta One of the main destinations for finalizing tours in the Mexcan Pacific coast, Puerto Vallarta is located in the “Bahia Banderas”. Unlike other destinations like Cancun, Puerto Vallarta was once a little town before becoming a tourist attraction. The Captain Francisco Cortés de San Buenaventura was the conqueror of this region. Some chronicles say that when he arrived to the town, around 20,000 armed native people were waiting for him with feather flags in their hands, therefore, the Spanish conquerors gave the site the name of “Bahia Banderas”, or “Flag Bay”. The name of the Bay is still used in present times. The town of Puerto Vallarta was founded in December 12, 1851 by Don Guadalupe Sanchez Torres, who gave the site the name of Las Peñas de Santa María de Guadalupe. The name was reduced to “Puerto Las Peñas.” The Port was built since it was used to transport silver from the mines located nearby. During the year 1918, the name was changed to honor a local governor, Ignacio L Vallarta. The site became famous worldwide when John Huston decided to make a move out of the theatre play “Iguana Nights”. Today, tourism is the main activity of the place, and Puerto Vallarta’s beaches are visited often by visitors. The town also counts with various archaeological and ecological sites in the surrounding areas, which makes it a very attractive spot for the International visitor. Interested in visiting this place?
